In 2008, my family and I moved to Carmel from the northwest suburbs of Chicago, in part, because we knew that my siblings and I would be eventually relocating my parents from West Virginia to this area. We did exactly that in 2010. My father’s cancer diagnosis in November of 2013 meant he could no longer handle my mother’s increasingly difficult dementia and we placed her in a memory care unit. I hired a caregiver and between the two of us, mom was never alone in the evenings. Thus, began my journey with caregivers and caregiving agencies. After my father’s passing, I eventually brought my mother home to live with my husband and I. She lived with us for 5 years and it was such a blessing! What I learned was that good caregiving can make all the difference in a family’s experience. Our wonderful caregivers handled all the tough stuff with my mom so that we got to enjoy the very best of her. That’s my goal for every family we serve – that they are relieved of the difficulties so they can love and enjoy their family.
